On 7th April, 1917, the 8th Royal West Kent battalion of 72 Brigade, 24th Division, moved into the trenches at Loos, close to Lens and it was here on 9th April that Henry Rogers was killed, The battalion diary provides no information on this, in fact it does not even have an entry for this date but he attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries.
